In the context of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), the "Country of Origin" is a value used to indicate the country where a product was manufactured, grown, or produced. This information is critical in supply chain operations, particularly for automotive tier suppliers, because it plays a key role in trade compliance, customs documentation, and the application of tariffs and trade agreements.

Why is the "Country of Origin" Important?

  1. Customs and Import Regulations: Many countries have specific rules regarding the origin of goods, impacting duties, taxes, and compliance with international trade laws.

  2. Tariffs and Trade Agreements: Some products may qualify for reduced tariffs or preferential treatment if they originate from certain countries that have free trade agreements (FTAs) with the destination country.

  3. Regulatory Compliance: Compliance with government regulations, such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) or the European Union's rules of origin, is often required for product entry into a market.

  4. Customer Requirements: Some customers, especially in the automotive sector, demand transparency about the source of materials for quality control, sustainability, and geopolitical risk reasons.

Is It Mandatory?

Yes, in many cases, the inclusion of the "Country of Origin" value is mandatory in EDI transactions, particularly for customs documents (such as invoices or bills of lading). The exact requirement varies depending on:

  • Type of EDI Document: For example, EDI 850 (Purchase Order) or EDI 856 (Advanced Shipping Notice) might require the Country of Origin when relevant.

  • Regulatory and Customer Requirements: Some customers or regions may enforce strict rules where it is mandatory to provide the country of origin, especially if trade agreements or tariff exemptions apply.

Failure to provide accurate country of origin information can lead to customs delays, fines, and loss of trade privileges. It is considered a best practice to ensure that this data is included and accurate in all relevant transactions.
